From Arenal to Monteverde
Take the road around the lake of Arenal and continue until just before the Nuevo Arenal town. Here the road goes straight or turns right; please turn right and continue that road to Tilarán. Once you have arrived at Tilarán follow the signs to Santa Elena or Monteverde.
From Arenal to Jaco.
There are many ways to get to Jaco from Arenal, all of them are interesting, some longer, others more twisted and others faster.
1- To Jaco via Lake Arenal -Tilaran- Cañas-Puntarenas-Orotina-Jaco
Take the road around the lake of Arenal and continue until just before Nuevo Arenal town. Here the road goes straight or turns right, please turn right and continue that road to Tilarán. Before you arrive in downtown Tilarán you will see the sign to Cañas. Once you reach Cañas continue through downtown until you reach the Panamerican Highway #1 . Once on the Highway turn left towards Puntarenas. Continue straight and just after the Oil Tanks on your right side, you will find the exit to Puntarenas. Get off the Panamerican highway by turning right towards Puntarenas. Once on the road to Puntarenas keep driving following the signs to Puerto Caldera, Orotina and Jaco/Quepos.
2- To Jaco via Chachagua-La Tigra- San Lorenzo-San Ramón-Palmares-Atenas-Orotina-Jaco
From Arenal Volcano take the road to La Fortuna. Once you reach downtown La Fortuna, on one side of the central park you will see the sign to Chachagua and La Tigra- Follow the sign by turning right and cross a little bridge. Keep driving until you get to Chachagua and then La Tigra. Here you will see another sign to Ciudad Quesada to your left, but keep going straight ahead to San Lorenzo and then to San Ramon. San Ramon is a bigger town. Once you arrive in the town of San Ramon keep going straight until you find the signs either to San Jose or to Puntarenas (See map #15). Once you reach the Panamerican Highway turn left back to San Jose until you see the exit to Palmares (close to San Ramón) Get off the highway and drive into Palmares downtown. Pass the church and you will find the park and the sign to Atenas. If you missed the sign just ask for the road to Atenas. Once you arrive in Atenas turn right at the main road and keep going straight to San Mateo, where you will find the signs to Jaco and Quepos. (See map #22)
3- To Jaco via Ciudad Quesada-Zarcero-Naranjo-Atenas-Orotina- Jaco
From La Fortuna to Ciudad Quesada you can take 2 roads, 1- La Fortuna-Tanque-Javillo-Florencia-Ciudad Quesada, or 2- La Fortuna-Chachagua-La Tigra-Florencia-Ciudad Quesada, both are interesting roads. Once you reach Ciudad Quesada follow the signs to Zarcero, Naranjo and then San Jose. (See map #15). Once you reach the Panamerican Highway turn left towards San Jose. Take the exit to Atenas and follow the signs to San Mateo, Orotina and Jaco. (See map #22)
From Arenal to Guanacaste
Take the road around the lake of Arenal and continue until just before Nuevo Arenal town. Here the road goes straight or turns right, please turn right and continue that road to Tilarán. Before you arrive in downtown Tilarán you will see the sign to Cañas. Once you reach Cañas continue through downtown until you reach the Panamerican Highway #1. Once on the Highway turn right towards Liberia.
**Advice**
In this area you will find some unpaved roads that are easy to drive during the dry season (Nov-May). But please note that during the rainy season (May-November) it is recommend to drive them with extreme caution and with 4x4 only.
